A high-level visit to Beirut by Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahd Yusuf Al-Sabah, has solidified the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing security cooperation, particularly in combating drug trafficking, with Kuwait reaffirming its unwavering support for Lebanon's stability.
In a significant diplomatic engagement, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahd Yusuf Al-Sabah, led a delegation to Beirut for high-level talks with Lebanese officials, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. [12, 15] The visit underscored a mutual commitment to reinforce the historic and fraternal ties between the two countries. During his meetings, Sheikh Fahd consistently reiterated his country's steadfast support for Lebanon, stating from the Baabda Palace, "I came to reaffirm the support of the State of Kuwait for Lebanon and its people under all circumstances." [3, 7]
The discussions yielded a crucial agreement to reactivate the Lebanese-Kuwaiti Higher Joint Committee, which has been dormant for over a decade, to systematically advance cooperation across all sectors. [4, 10, 14] This committee is tasked with creating a framework to follow up on all discussed files and identifying priorities for Kuwaiti assistance, including potential development funds. [3, 11] The reactivation of the joint body signals a renewed and structured approach to managing bilateral relations and ensuring that commitments translate into tangible outcomes. [4, 16]
A primary focus of the talks was the enhancement of security cooperation, with a particular emphasis on combating drug trafficking, an issue that has previously strained relations. [3, 10, 17] Meetings between Sheikh Fahd and his Lebanese counterparts centered on developing joint strategies to address cross-border crime and the illicit narcotics trade. [8, 18] Both nations acknowledged the importance of coordinated security efforts to ensure regional stability. [9] This collaboration is seen as a vital step in rebuilding trust and addressing shared threats effectively.
The visit by the senior Kuwaiti official has been warmly received in Lebanon as a positive gesture of Gulf solidarity. Beyond the diplomatic and security assurances, there is a strong hope that this renewed engagement will encourage Kuwaiti and other Gulf tourists to return to Lebanon for the summer season. [8, 9] Such a development would provide a much-needed boost to Lebanon's struggling economy, demonstrating the tangible benefits of strengthened political and security ties.
